10 Key Questions University Leaders Should Ask About Quality Science and Mathematics Teacher Preparation

“ What are the most critical components or indicators of quality STEM teacher preparation programs and what must we, campus presidents and chancellors, do to help build quality programs?”
This was the bottom-line question that university leaders asked the co-directors of the APLU Science and Mathematics Teaching Imperative (SMTI), Howard Gobstein and Charles Coble in 2011. SMTI is a collaborative of 130+ APLU institutions across the United States with the shared commitment to increase the quantity and quality of science and mathematics teachers produced from their campuses. Campus presidents and chancellors were willing, but they needed guidance, particularly on the question of quality. In order to address this challenge and with NSF support, Drs. Jennifer Presley and Charles Coble embarked on a novel strategy to provide an answer to the campus leaders’ question about quality and their role in advancing quality STEM teacher education. In the end, 10 Key Questions became the focus of what campus leaders should ask and have answered in their quest to promote quality programs. The study and findings will be the central focus of Dr. Coble’s presentation at the March Hugo Rossi Lecture.
Charles R. Coble is Co-founder & Partner of the Third Mile Group and Teacher Preparation Analytics and co-director of the Science and Mathematics Teaching Imperative, a national initiative of the Association for Public and Land-grant Universities. Dr. Coble is also professor-emeritus of Science Education at East Carolina University and was, for 13 years, Dean of the ECU School of Education. He was, for 6 years, Vice-President of the 17-campus University of North Carolina and in that capacity led in the creation and construction of the UNC Center for School Leadership Development. Dr. Coble served as Vice President for Policy Studies and Programs at the Education Commission of the States in Denver, Colorado for 3 years. Over his career, Coble has directed over $12M in grants and contracts and is the author or co-author of 10 books and over 80 published articles. Dr. Coble holds an AA in Science degree from Mars Hill College and a Bachelor’s degree in Botany, a Master’s degree in Science Education, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, all from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has maintained, since 1964, an active North Carolina secondary science teaching license.
